I earned a Ph.D. (2009) and M.Ed. (2004) in Counselor Education from North Carolina State University. My undergraduate studies culminated in a B.A. in Sociology with a certification in gerontology and a concentration in Human Resource Management from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1999).

I am currently a National Certified Counselor (NCC) #91220, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) #5375, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor (LCMHC-S) #S5375 in North Carolina, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) #3484.

I have been a licensed clinical mental health counselor (LCMHC) for 18 years (2006) and a National Certified Counselor for 20 years (2004). In total, I have been working within the counseling field for 23 years.

For five years, I counseled students at Duke University on career issues and transitions, administering and interpreting the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory, for which I am certified. I have also taught first-year college students at North Carolina State University in a first-year seminar focused on adjusting and transitioning to college. Moreover, I have taught several master’s and doctoral level counseling courses at North Carolina State University within the Counselor Education department, including but not limited to Gender Issues, Cross-cultural Counseling, Group Counseling, Career Counseling and Development (both master’s and doctoral level), Introduction to Counseling, Theories and Techniques in Counseling, Strategies and Techniques for Supervision, The American College Student, Introduction to College Counseling, Emergency Preparedness and Crisis Management, Foundations to Clinical Mental Health, and the Internship course. I have supervised master’s level students completing their internships within a college setting and alumni seeking licensure. My theoretical approach to counseling is eclectic, with a foundation in person-centered, cognitive-behavioral, feminist frameworks, solution-focused, choice theory, and reality therapy.

Within the counseling profession, I have worked in various capacities, including academia, counseling centers, career centers, and private practice. I am a National Certified Counselor, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor in North Carolina, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor. I currently teach within the Counselor Education program at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, instructing master’s level courses both on-campus and online. My experience in counseling spans young adults, adolescents, college students, and adults, involving both individual and group counseling. I have counseled individual clients, couples, and families. My work at Meredith Counseling Center involved counseling young women on stress management, eating disorders, ADHD, and physical limitations requiring classroom accommodations. Additionally, I have counseled adolescents, adults, and couples in private practice, addressing issues such as stress management, divorce, ADHD, suicidal ideation, career transition, etc. For younger clients, I have utilized play therapy techniques.

Additionally, I have been teaching online and on-campus within the helping professions for fifteen years. I am a Teaching Professor at North Carolina State University, assisting in developing the Online Counselor Education Master’s Program and coordinating and advising the College Counseling online program.
